Makeup artiste Sabrina Suhail introduces bespoke lipsticks

When it comes to finding the right lipstick for your skin tone, mass produced cult favourites are not always the answer. We’re looking at you NARS Semi Matte Lipstick in Schiap and MAC in Ruby Woo! While these shades are definitely must-haves, as recommended by make-up obsessives, for a reason, there’s nothing quite like a bespoke lipstick that perfectly complements your natural colour. With the beauty world waking up to the benefits of customised perfumes and diversified shades for foundation (for instance, Fenty Beauty by Rihanna has 40 shades, with the option of blending two or more at the counter if your colour doesn’t match the original 40), made-to-order lipsticks are soon following suit.

New York has Bite Beauty, Melbourne has The Lip Lab and London has A La Carte Cosmetics. Now, thanks to renowned bridal make-up artist, Sabrina Suhail, the concept is being introduced in Bengaluru. “I’ve seen a lot of women blend two or more lipsticks to get the shade they require and that means buying three different colours. That’s when I thought this was something worth exploring,” explains Sabrina. Organic, gluten free, cruelty free and vegan, the ingredients are imported from USA and Europe. Having introduced it just last month, the artist has thus far created 50 shades for 50 different clients. “I think the most interesting colours I’ve  been able to play around with are blue and green. Another great thing about us is that if there’s a lipstick shade that has been discontinued, we can recreate it for you,” she shares.

THE EXPERIENCE
It’s an overcast weekday afternoon and we’re at Sabrina’s studio in Ulsoor. We give her an idea of the shade we would like (dull orange that’s perfect for dailywear). If you’re unsure, browse their ‘shade library,’ to pick what you fancy. The next step is choosing a texture — McMatte Liquid Lipstick, Moisture Roll, Matte Creme or Balmy Balm. We pick the first option. Finally, we choose from a range of fragrant natural oils. We ask for mandarin, but other options include citrus, vanilla and more. The pigments, butters and oils are all blended right in front of us. The final product after being tested on our skin is piped into two tubes, one regular sized, and a miniature travel pack. The wrong shade of orange tends to look alien on duskier skin, but Sabrina’s knowledge of colour and complementing tones means our new lipstick, which we christened Sunset, is just right. She uses silicone resin to create the matte effect so your lips don’t get dry, and the colour lasts long. The hue and specifications are saved and pulled out whenever required. All you need to do is tell them the name of your lipstick.

Rs.2,700++. At Ulsoor
