Ananya Malhotra launches her new collection Lotus Samsara 

An extension of her previous collection, Lotus Samsara marks the rebranding of her label, now Ananya, and the beginning of a bolder and more vibrant phase in the 24-year-old’s design sensibilities.

While her family has long been associated with fashion, the allure of jewels and gems is something that Ananya Malhotra has not been able to shake off. An extension of her previous collection, Lotus Samsara marks the rebranding of her label, now Ananya, and the beginning of a bolder and more vibrant phase in the 24-year-old’s design sensibilities. Having designed brooches for Nobel Prize-winning women scientists in 2010, collaborating with Swarovski for the Runway Rocks fashion show in London in 2013 and launching her brand Naya last year, this youngster is well on her way to create a niche. We caught up with Ananya, daughter of Atul and Tina Malhotra, owners of Evoluzione, about what makes the collection unique and how she would style her collection.

This is your second collection for your brand – what has changed in terms of design?


The first collection was my interpretation of traditional jewellery. I was still starting out then and by design, each piece was smaller and subdued. The second collection is more conceptual. It is taken largely from my previous collections Celestial Lotus and Synergies – with the lotus as the base. However, this time around, I was more inspired by the shapes and textures of the lotus. It’s a more vibrant collection as a whole. 

Do you think you’ve grown to be more confident with experimenting with your design process?

When I started out, my designs were very dainty. But over the past year, I have learned much and that resonates through my jewellery – the designs are bigger, edgier and more geometric. The theme of Lotus Samsara is the cycle of reincarnation. An exploration of the journey that we all go through – of how we evolve into a better self, which is also why I decided to make the label eponymous brand. 
I have opened up to using a different set of gemstones like the emerald in the collection. Besides, doing very well in the Indian market, the emerald is a very powerful stone and is associated with compassion and unconditional love. This collection also has a lot of sapphires and diamonds. 

Who according to you is the Ananya woman?
I envision her to be someone who is comfortable in her own skin and has a good eye for detail. A woman who is willing to experiment with fashion, but understands the simplicity of timeless shapes.

The whole aesthetic of the Lotus Samsara matches your fascination with spirituality and tradition. How would you personally style your favourite piece?

This collection is really me and my style. And I personally love hoops. My favourite is an all-diamond lotus earring. When you look at it from the inside, you can see the flowers, but when you look at it from a distance it just looks like you are wearing regular hoops. I would probably wear it with an edgy off-shoulder top and a pair of ripped jeans.
