In South Goa’s Salcette district sits the picturesque Mobor beach sandwiched between the Arabian sea and the river Sal. It was during an evening spent here that designer Deepa Choudhary and her business partner, Madhurima Tougia found inspiration for their three-month old Bengaluru-based label, aptly named Moborr. “We realised that the setting we were in was everything we wanted our brand to stand for - natural, easy and laidback yet chic and striking,” explains Deepa, who has 15 years of experience in retail and merchandising with export houses. Madhurima, on the other hand, is a trained marketing professional.

Organic way

With the push towards sustainable fashion getting stronger with each passing day, the duo saw it fit that its brand sticks to organic, handwoven fabrics for their garments. “We felt a strong need to contribute in our own little way to a sustainable lifestyle,” says Deepa. Coarse cotton with herringbone and diamond weaves are turned into shift dresses, shirt dresses, boho tops and crop tops. The fits are structured yet flattering and shapely yet comfortable. “Comfort was very important to us when we were designing our first collection,” reveals Deepa.

Tying in with the theme of the label, the pieces in their current collection are named after rivers around the world.  The Memuru, for instance, is named after the Norwegian river. It’s a slate grey charcoal dress with angular pockets and elbow-length sleeves - perfect for the office or even a catch-up with friends. For something a lot more striking, pick Rhine - an indigo dress with pockets in the front and a deep V-neck. A simple top, the Congo, lets the natural colour of handwoven cotton stand out and comes with an interesting button-down detail at the back. “All our garments use natural colours,” reveals Deepa, adding that their bags are also biodegradable. “We’re trying to be eco-conscious in every way. You can plant our bags into the soil and herbs will grow out of them,” she says, signing off.
