Feeling haute: Breathable fabrics and lightweight designs are key to Gatsby’s summer collection

Breathable fabrics and lightweight designs are key to Gatsby’s summer collection

When Heeba Sait envisioned Gatsby’s new Spring/Summer collection under her luxury label Aliph, it challenged many perceptions associated with men’s suiting. Expect a range of lightweight and unstructured garments using exclusive fabrics and textures, where the 27-year-old’s attention to detail is all consuming. “Most customers want wrinkle-free garments. But, all apparel, including suits, always crease at joints. I believe creases add character to the fabric, which is why we have an entire linen range in this collection,” Heeba says with a smile. The label’s first ever S/S line titled Summer Renaissance, built around minimalist designs, uses fabrics like seersucker, cotton and their own range of textured linen, wool and silk blends.

Breaking the habit

Long associated with dressing Kollywood and Bollywood royalty like Rajinikanth, Karan Johar and more recently Arjun Kapoor and  crafting red carpet looks for global cinema A-listers at Festival de Cannes for five years in a row, the seven-year-old luxury label is now looking to expand its India market base by way of entry into the Fashion Design Council of India. Straying from their usual design directive of creating a fashion capsule, the brand’s creative design head, Heeba, tells us that the SS collection falls in line with the carving of a new market niche – teens and older. “With Summer Renaissance we are taking a break from suits, tuxedos and sherwanis and have experimented with no-lining jackets, unstructured blazers, cotton chinos, hand-made linen trousers and party wear.” The collection which includes 25 looks, features an interesting play on pockets – flap, book and slant pockets, and surface detailing – yoke patterns on bhandgalas, surface embroidery on bandis and patch appliqué work on kurtas

Simple perfection

Besides reviving the three-button suit, the collection introduces a bit of spunk with stringed joggers, formal cotton cargo pants, chinos with paisley-print fold detailing and double pleated pants with adjustable waist buttons.

With the release of the collection time along with the opening of their new store on the ECR, expect to find a mix of summer beach casuals like asymmetrical kurtas and camouflage shirts in a palette of pink, green, pastel blues, beige, hazelnut and white.

Rs 4,000  onwards. At Gatsby stores in Nungambakkam and ECR, and Aliph in Dubai. Details: 9841182288
