Coimbatore's summer delights

Cold and hearty

The Madurai Jigarthanda opened less than a week ago, and is already creating considerable traffic at the NSR Road. The term Jigarthanda translates to ‘cool heart’ and has its origins in Madurai. The stall that boasts of at least five hundred customers every day has people coming from all over the city to taste the authentic Jigarthanda mix brought right from its makers in Madurai. “It is always busy at the shop and with the summer approaching, the time proves to be just about right to have started it”, says Mohammed Fazil, the owner of the stall. For those not familiar with the drink, at a standard rate of `50, it is a chilled sugary drink with a slight malty taste. The stringy gelatinous substance in it is Kadal Paasi (Agar- Agar), the emulsifier. On requesting for a special Jigarthanda, you get the regular with a dollop of vanilla ice-cream and a scoop of Basundi, the Bengali sweet in it, making the extra ten bucks totally worth it.
