Romance with ice cream flavours like ginger-lemon

Everyone turns to ice cream when they need to feel lighter. Three-week-old Fathy n Zaras Originals at Kathrikadavu offers a perfect spot to set this mood, as you indulge in natural flavours including tender coconut and hazelnut. The white walls of the 36-cover space—spread over an area of nearly 1,500 sq ft—are strewn with little baby pink hearts. I pick up a granulated guava smoothie at their counter as owner Nazreth Najumudeen joins me at the table.
“Whenever we hosted parties, guests who came over couldn’t get enough of my desserts. This encouraged me to experiment more and eventually conceptualise an all-natural creamery,” says Nazreth, who recently moved to Kochi from Oman.

Besides 33 distinct flavours and six additional sugar-free variants including chikku (sapodilla) and banana, the spread on offer here is bound to enthral everyone, especially the ice cream connoisseurs. The first one I go for is their coconut flavour, which tastes of dry roasted coconut leaving behind little grains of the fruit. Nazreth enthusiastically suggests that I try one of her earliest combinations, the choco caramel peanut, a favourite amongst peanut butter enthusiasts.
“We do not add any gum to preserve the texture of the cream, nor do we add artificial colours,” she explains while passing me a pleasant light pink watermelon scoop. “Though people have already approached us for franchises, we want to take our time to set this central outlet properly before expanding,” says the 37-year-old, as I wind up with their plantain jaggery, which evokes food memories of the old-school aval (flattened rice) combo.
