Opt for pizzas by the slice at Kalo’s on Elliot’s Beach

From the infamous Kentucky Fried Chicken to the humble Indian vada pav, the sea side at Besant Nagar has got it all. Adding to the myriad cuisines is the one-month-old Kalo’s, next to the popular outlet called Pupil, serving a selection of Continental fare.

The outlet is owned by 29-year-old Lokeshwaran Dhanasekaran, who quit his IT job to fulfill his childhood dream of opening up a restaurant. For him, Besant Nagar came as an obvious pick because of the innumerable people flocking the beachside during weekends. However, we learn that waffles and pizzas weren’t his first pick when he decided to open an eatery. The initial plan was to open up a shawarma shack, only, with a unique twist. “Nonetheless, there were already two kiosks selling the same thing in the area and customers would have to choose from three outlets if I had started out too,” says Lokesh when we asked about the change of plans.

The neatly arranged monochrome outdoor seats looked inviting even without the eye-catchy table lights nearby. Not long after we took our seats, we were greeted with a glass of chilled minty lime soda along with a plate of garlic bread, with generous amounts of melted cheese over it.

“The speciality here is the option to order pizzas by the slice and this lets you have a lot more choices compared to ordering one single pizza,” suggests the owner. We go ahead and order a medium pizza with two slices each of mushrooms, smoked chicken drizzled with BBQ sauce, and the star of the night — paneer and Chicken 65 pizza that was topped with fried chicken and paneer mixed with unique South Indian spices, all topped with the usual marinara, made in-house. Even after all that cheese, we still couldn’t say no to a serving of warm Macaroni and Cheese. What followed as a makeshift dessert were Belgian waffles on a Popsicle stick (waffle pops), drizzled with generous amounts of white and dark chocolate sauce and sprinkled with almonds.

“I want to first establish the business here and let people remember  the name Kalo’s, which literally means beautiful in Greek, and then branch out within the next six months,” Lokesh says adding that he intends taking his outlets as pop ups to different city colleges.
