Sly Granny's new menu has classics with a modern twist

Sly's the limit at this restaurant

Sly Granny opened its doors earlier this year with a tongue-in-cheek approach to its food, cocktails and ambience. Now, the restaurant has revamped its menu with new additions. On a surprisingly crowded Monday afternoon, we stepped into the kitschy-cool venue to sample the new dishes.

The menu is divided into small and large plates. From the small plates section, we were served Quinoa Salad. Made with quinoa, brown rice, roasted bell peppers, toasted almonds, asparagus and broccoli, it’s the pesto and tahini cream dressing that made this a hit. Next on the table was the Mackerel, which was a bit of a let down. The quinoa-crusted fried fish, served with shrimp mousse and pickled onions, had an overpowering fishy taste. However, the Mixed Bean Flat Bread made up for it. Baked in-house, with mixed bean hash, pickled radish, green chilli and white cheese, we kept digging in for more.

The Hunter’s Stew, which we had for mains, was the best dish on the table. The classic French-style chicken was served with mixed bean cassoulet and tahini cream. Their Shepherd’s Pie Tart was made with minced lamb instead of beef and we say it was a winner. Next, we tried the East Indian Gassi — pan-seared halibut, served on a bed of peas pulao, and a tangy raw mango and onion gravy. Vegetarians can opt for the Mac n Cheese. At Sly Granny, this familiar dish takes the form of crumb-coated, deep-fried blocks of pasta served atop cheese sauce, and tomato relish. Some other dishes include the Eggplant Parmigiana (eggplant and sundried tomato with caper sauce, parmesan cheese and a truffled mustard ricotta whip), the Sly FC (Southern style buttermilk fried chicken with a maple thyme drizzle and hot sauce) and the Popcorn Shrimp (cornmeal-crusted fried shrimp with a pickled cucumber and a curry leaf dip).

Sweet nothings
We were treated to three of the new desserts. The first, and our favourite, was the Coconut Crepe Parcels — rice flour crepes stuffed with coconut halwa and served with vanilla anglaise. The Bread Pudding made with chocolate sourdough, dried cherries, walnuts and served with rosemary custard was pure comfort food. If you are in the mood for something sinful, try the Choco Mousse — chocolate brownie, chocolate creameaux with espresso chocolate mousse and grape jelly.

The new menu delivers on what Sly Granny is known for — bringing forth the emotions of forgotten ingredients and lost recipes in a contemporary avatar.
