When there is a whiff of sausages browning on the barbeque grill and heavy mugs with foaming heads making the rounds – it is the Bavarian omen for celebration. What’s more, you do not need to catch the next flight to Munich to be a part of the iconic Oktoberfest. Recreating the festival here, Hyatt Regency Chennai has rigged up the familiar blue and white canopies along with beer kegs and German music as they kick-started the festival last Saturday at the al fresco side of their lounge bar. “This year, we are proud to have our sixth season of the Oktoberfest — which is a  200-year-old Bavarian festival — right here in Chennai,"shares Madhav Sehgal, General Manager of the hotel. He adds that this year’s edition is the longest Oktoberfest yet — held from September 16 to October 7. Expect the classic sausage rollout along with traditional desserts like apple strudel, and a buffet of other offerings including Bavarian goulash and currywurst besides an interactive counter for special pork dishes.

Though we were mildly disappointed that the German beers didn’t make it to the bar counter this time, the other options at the table keep the spirits up. A pint of chilled Kingfisher gets us started in the right direction and we try a fresh tasting salad of chicken and cheese. The baby potatoes and chives in the next platter hold our attention till the bratwursts arrived. The pork sausage goes well with the variation of the sauerkraut here — slow cooked in white wine, the shredded red cabbage is sweet and addictive. And what goes even better with the sausages is the honey option from the line-up of mustards on the tray – including the likes of Pommery, English and Duon. The chicken sausages are a delight and when chewed slowly you can get the complementing flavours of cheese and red chillies that the filling is stuffed with. But the Snail Sausages truly hit the spot, with the distinct fennel flavour and the deliciously seasoned pork meat.

The traditional breads and the salads need to be a constant along with refilling our mugs even as we move on to the mains and relish a perfectly done Blond Beer Roasted chicken, all glazed and juicy. However, while nibbling on pretzels, sourdough and such, we suggest you keep some space forthe dessert line-up.TheKaiserschmarrn, a shredded pancake at
