Love steaks? This forest-inspired eatery in Alwarpet is just the right place

Steaks under a canopy of foliage? The Bark is the newest addition to Alwarpet’s food scape.

Over the last one year, several engineering students have completed their course and then taken another career route. While some of them have gone the start-up way, a few have jumped into the food business. Three 24-year-olds have decided to do the same with The Bark, a restaurant that witnessed a big opening last week with P3Ps and even the Nawab of Arcot making an appearance at the launch.  Anil Rattheran, Arasan and Niyas Ahamed completed their integrated engineering course from SRM University, last year and then took a year to completely set up the place, with expert inputs from chefs and restaurant owners. The warm interiors were done by friends who are architects, with hand painted murals of trees, and vines covering the walls and ceilings.

Located in the heart of Alwarpet, The Bark, specialises in global cuisine. The menu was curated by their friend’s brother, Singaara Karthik, who is in Qatar, and manages about 22 restaurants there. “When Pizza Hut first launched, he was one of the people who managed it,” says Anil. “He was the executive chef at Bike & Barrel when it opened, so he gave us a lot of advice on how to run the restaurant.” The 75-seater has an open seating area, as well as private dining rooms. One of them, he says, he plans on turning into a themed area called The Pride of Alwarpet. “We are now collecting information and photographs to do up this place. This road is called Maharaja Surya Road and the adjacent one is called Maharani Surya. We figured there might be a lot of history here. We are now introducing characters from history like the Poetic Officer named Walter Yeldham who was a British Army officer who wrote under his pen name, Aliph Cheem.”

The first few dishes roll out — a Cheese Tortilla Soup and War Shells Spicy Chicken. The soup turns out to be thick and cheesy, topped with just the right amount of tortilla chips. The War Shells Spicy Chicken is baked potato jackets stuffed with spicy shredded chicken, which makes for a great appetiser. For drinks, choose from their selection of cold-pressed juices like orange, carrot and apple — that are made in-house.

In the mood for a salad on a humid day, we ordered the Caesar Fishing Skill, a baked mahi mahi rested on a bed of fresh vegetables, with cherry tomatoes, capers and a vinaigrette dressing. For mains, we get From The Pearl Harbour, an impressive stack of grilled chicken patties, caramelised onions and their in-house barbeque sauce. It’s juicy, messy and all over the place — exactly what a burger should be. We take a break from the meat with their Baked Vegetable Melodies, which was warm and soupy but with the right amount of cheese. Their piece de resistance was their tenderloin steak, which was cooked to a perfect medium rare. This is definitely one of our recommendations, with the meat being buttery and tender and their mashed potatoes, silky and flavourful. For dessert, they have ice creams from Schmoozies and a selection of rich and creamy cake shakes. What’s more! This is a pet-friendly restaurant where you can take your furry friends, indulge in their small dog pool and lay around in their lawn. The dining area, however, is neatly cordoned off from the pet area.

Meal for two `1,200.
From 11 am onwards.
