Stressing on the assets of knowledge of French for improved career prospects, Suchitra Ravi, the career counselor at Alliance Francaise, says that college-goers, job seekers and professionals are expected to sign up for the course offering Diplôme d'études en langue française (DELF), the French language diploma, which is recognised worldwide.  “Coimbatore being the industrial hub of the South has many connections to the Western world and youngsters here are more open to taking up new tasks and ideas,” Suchitra shares. With two French tutors at the helm, the courses also advanced levels and  specialisations such as Business French, French civilisation and culture that will be included according to the demand.  Apart from the regular sessions for students of ages 16 and above, an additional course for teenagers of ages 11 to 15 has also been included.

"Learning any language, for that matter demands some effort," says Suchitra when asked if French is difficult to master compared to other foreign languages. “If a student makes it to the class regularly and puts in at least 20 minutes every day to learning, he will easily get a fair grasp of the language by the end of the course,” says Suchithra who added that almost 4000 students graduate from Alliance every year.

As part of the course, cultural programs and activities including screening of French movies will be held to help learners pick up the nuances of usage of French. Even while dealing with novices, the tutors at AFM are under express instructions not to use a word of English or any regional language, we are told. “From day one onwards, the students are trained to communicate in French using gestures and facial expressions. The courses at Alliance are designed in such a way that the students are exposed to the language as well as the French culture,” says Malathy S, head of the branch, who added that the institute is welcome change in the foreign language scene in the city.
