Travel Insight: More Indians are taking train trips to south Indian hill stations

With summer at its peak, everyone is looking forward to the Eid long weekend, 15th – 17th June, when most travellers are headed to the hills. A study by leading travel marketplace, ixigo reveals that as opposed to popular belief, Himachal and Uttarakhand are not exclusively everyone’s preferred choices. This year more and more Indians are opting to visit hill stations such as Munnar, Coorg, Ooty, and Coonoor, down south, especially by train.

The study indicates 20% growth in train bookings from all over India for Ooty, 15% for Munnar and 11% for Coorg. It is interesting to note that 17% of the total travellers booked for the long weekend from Delhi are travelling to Coonoor and 13% to Ooty via train. People are opting for longer, yet scenic train journeys over flights. While solo travel is booming at 18%, family travel remains the biggest segment with 45% bookings.

Commenting on the findings, Aloke Bajpai, ixigo CEO & Co-founder said, “While many of us equate a mountain holiday to hill stations such as Manali, Mussoorie and Nainital, we were pleasantly surprised to see data for the upcoming long weekend suggest otherwise! With South India hill stations gaining popularity, we have seen an 18% increase in hotel bookings for Ooty, 10% for Coorg and 5% for Coonoor. Metro cities such as Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, and Mumbai contribute the maximum to long weekend travel.”

Amongst the Himalayan holiday destinations, data suggests that flight searches to popular places like Leh and Jammu went up by an average of about 20%. Srinagar seems to be gaining most popularity with a spike in flight searches of about 26%.
