Is face waxing harmful for your skin? Here's what you need to know

Udisha

A lot of people rely on face waxing to get rid of unwanted facial hair. However, besides being painful, it carries certain risks, given the facial skin is quite delicate.

It strips the protective barrier

Face waxing requires one to pull the wax strips with some force to make sure the hair comes off at once. This process also strips a very think surface skin layer, thus making the moisture barrier prone to redness or irritation.

It can trigger breakouts and in-growns

Face wax removes hair from the root which leads to the follicles opening up, inviting dirt and bacteria that can lead to break-outs. If the hair breaks beneath the surface, it can also cause painful ingrown bumps.

Temperature and technique create major risks

Wrong wax or incorrect technique can make facial wax go wrong. If it is not done properly, the process can lead to burns and micro-tears that can cause scars.

Safety measure

If you have sensitive skin, avoid facial wax and opt for threading or laser removal for long-term results. If you choose to get a face wax, avoid heat and sweat for the next 24-48 hours. To prevent irritation, apply moisturiser or aloe vera gel and never skip sunscreen.
