Tips to keep in mind if you are planning a trip to high-altitude hill stations

Acclimatise gradually

If you are travelling to high-altitude regions like Ladakh, always make sure to acclimatise by halting at a location midway for 24-48 hours to enable your body to adjust to low oxygen levels. While you acclimatise, eat light food, avoid alcohol and do not engage in strenuous activities. This is especially important for older people.

Stay hydrated

Hydration is extremely important in higher altitudes because the body fluids evaporate at a quicker rate, leading to dehydration and breathlessness. Make sure to drink water in regular intervals throughout the day and avoid alcohol, caffeine and heavy food.

Layer your clothing

The weather in the mountains is very unpredictable and can change rapidly. It is always wise to wear multiple layers so that you can remove or add the layers depending on the temperature, making sure your body temperature remains stable.

Carry essential medications

High-altitude hill stations are remote areas with limited access to medicines. Always carry essential medicines for headache, altitude sickness, nausea, fever, stomach upset, besides your regular medications. It is also advised to carry portable oxygen tubes for emergencies. Make sure to consult your doctor before you travelling to such destinations.
