In life, there are common experiences that bind us together. Ranging from global warming to FOMO-driven social media culture, we have several such elements in our life which make us relate to each other. Thiruvananthapuram-based artist Shibhu Chand’s work stems from these experiences and the impact they have on our lives. “For me, it is the lack of space that matters the most. Whether it is living conditions or individual freedom, we’re being restricted by a set of elements that suffocates us, limits us and makes us shrink into ourselves,” begins the government employee turned artist, who is exhibiting his series called Limited Space at Fort Kochi-based Draavidia Art Gallery.

Vibrant in nature, his acrylic in canvas pieces showcase shapes that are intertwined with each other, signifying the inescapable proximity that we’re forced to put up with.Created using five colours that are usually seen in the ritualistic tradition of Kalamezhuthu, this former art educator’s work is an ode to the simple yet intricate folk art practices of India. A dedicated promoter of alternative art practices, Shibhu has been instrumental in coming forward with innovative ideas such as exhibitions conducted through websites.“Back in the days, I also conducted a show where all my paintings were wrapped up in plastic, just like the things we buy at a supermarket. It was my way of protesting the consumerist culture that’s ruling over the society now,” informs Shibhu, who’s currently working on a line of sketches depicting the sacred groves (kaavu).
