Though he finds comfort in relying on his proficiency in Carnatic singing, D Sathyaprakash’s diversity in styles originate from experiments with Hindustani and RnB, admits the fan of Bruno Mars and Arijit Singh. The city-born musician, who moved to Chennai, recently shared a tweet announcing the release of his song Koottippo Koodave in Vijay Sethupathi’s much-awaited Junga earlier this week. The singer also asked for votes as a part of his ‘Best Playback Singer-Male’ nomination in the 11th Annual Edison Awards to his 35.3K followers. Hoping to maintain a balance between independent work and industrial projects, he shares that patience and practice are essential parts of his journey of success.

Here are excerpts from a quick interview while he was in the city:

How has the music sensitivities in the city changed over the years? What do you find lacking in the modern age artists from here?

I hold Rajalakshmi Fine Arts in Saibaba Colony and my guru Pandanallur Chandrasekhara Bhagavathar very dear, as they took care to train me as their own. Back then, it was an age of the Carnatic boom and I got a platform to pursue my career from those roots. But now, even when there is a drastic increase in independent artists and with greater opportunities to stage talent, I see an unexplained disinterest in classical music with the newer crop of musicians lacking technical expertise.

2017 was a great year with chartbusters from Merasal and Kaatru Veliyidayi. What can we expect from you in 2018?

I’m still not over the heart-warming response or the fact that I got to work with AR Rahman and Harris Jayaraj, and co-singers like Chinmayi and Kailash Kher. This year already saw releases in January like Geedhara Kiliye from Nimir and Oru Thaana Pole from Mannar Vagaiyara and the latest is Koottippo Koodave from Makkal Selvan’s Junga. I’m also looking for ways to spot young artistes and see if any collaborations from my side can help them.

What do you miss about Coimbatore the most?

Unmistakeably, the weather. The peace that Coimbatore comes with is something that I miss in these busy times.
