Voctronica, a Mumbai-based acapella band, has been selected to perform at the 2019 Asian Cup A Capella Competition hosted by Vocal Asia Festival in Japan this August. The band was first put together by British Council India and Sony Music India, in conjunction with renowned beatboxer and vocal performer Shlomo from the UK. In early 2018, after a few line-up changes, the band started performing their original tracks. To make their way to the festival, they have started a crowdfunding campaign for all those who wish to contribute. We speak to members of the band:

How would you define your music?
Arjun Nair: We call ourselves a vocal ensemble because we don't particularly identify as a traditional acapella band. While the crux of the band's music is all-vocal, our goal is to try and sound as "instrumental" as possible. We don't restrict ourselves to genres and perform everything from pop to reggae and drum and bass, but the core of our sound is usually electronic and instrument-like.

You were recently in Moscow to represent India at A Cappella Spring Festival. How was your experience?
Avinash Tewari: Incredible, overwhelming, and heartwarming. It's still a nascent festival, given that this was only its third year, so we hadn't heard of it before they wrote in to us, and once they did, we couldn't stop thinking about it. It surpassed every expectation we had, and then some.

Meeting vocal performers from all around the world, playing across a city like Moscow where people may not understand you, but will open their ears and hearts to you, in what is easily the most incredible A Capella gathering/festival any of us have ever witnessed. It was quite something.

We poured our hearts out, learnt a lot, made some amazing friends, and came back with new found love and respect for the human voice, our incredible line of work, and for Russia.

What will you perform in Japan?
Warsha Easwar: The 2019 Asian Cup A Capella Competition hosted by Vocal Asia Festival is a pretty big deal for us, and we definitely want to put our best foot forward. While we cannot explicitly tell you what exact songs we will be playing, we can tell you this for sure: we will play a cover or two, but we will most definitely play our original music. And our main goal is to bring the uniqueness of India's sound to the Asian Cup; because the sounds of this land are truly incredible, and if we're going to represent the country, we will do it right.
