Coimbatore-bred singer-songwriter Arjit Sahai has been penning verses since he was a teen. From spending his adolescent years in a boarding school at Ooty to working in the Merchant Navy, he says, “When you have a lot of time to yourself, listening to music and writing lyrics becomes unavoidable.” After working in the Merchant Navy for three years, Arjit moved to Mumbai in 2017, decided to take up music full time and recently released his debut three-track EP, Tell me Everything.

Describing Mumbai as his ticket to discovering himself as a musician, the frontman of Arjit and Company met percussionist Ritesh Malaney and bass guitarist Dhruv Kathuria during open mic sessions in the city. “Ritesh and I started jamming together and we, formed the band, later on, in October last year.”

Tell me Everything opens with an alt-rock leaning title song that takes on a dark, melancholic undertone, which the 24-year-old tells us is about a ‘journey of self and coming to terms with failure’. “I wrote it when I was still on board the ship, and was contemplating what to do with my life. The lyrics dealt with these emotions of ‘can you forgive yourself?’” The third track, Follow Me Down, was composed after his stint offshore, while F**king Love You was inspired by the TV series, Dexter. “I’m not the best with other forms of communication, but with music, I am able to freely emote. The second song was a release of pent up feelings. The title of the song — F**king Love You, is a quote from Dexter, when the character of Deborah Morgan finally confesses her love for Dexter.” After performing in Mumbai and Bengaluru last month, the trio is looking forward to gigs in Delhi to support the EP, while also working on new material for their next album.
