THE ROMANTIC NUMBER Tum Hi Aana from the Siddharth Malhotra and Tara Sutaria starrer film Marjaavaan has already struck a chord with listeners. Composed by Kolkata girl Payal Dev, who gave popular scores for Student of the Year 2 and sung in Bajirao Mastani and Namaste England, the film is set to release today. Indulge caught up with the Mumbaibased artiste who doesn’t want her craft to get lost in the digital space. Excerpts:

The music of Tum Hi Aana has caught up with listeners. How do you feel about it?

Honestly, I never expected the song to become this big. I am extremely humbled by the love and support of people around me. It feels good when your work is appreciated. People are singing the song and even connecting with me and giving raw feedback on social media. It motivates me to keep working harder.

What is your process of composing music?

I usually make voice records whenever I think of a fresh tune. And it so happened that once I was looking for a catchy tune for a single in my files when the hook line of Tum Hi Aana attracted me. Since lyricist Kunaal Verma was there then he spontaneously added lyrics to the melody and it turned into a full-fledged song. Jubin Nautiyal, who has a velvety voice and who is like a brother to me added his beautiful vocals and made the song complete.

You are working on a single…

Yes, I am working on a single like many other artistes but I don’t want to just keep creating music and singing because I have to. If I have ten new compositions, I will make sure I release the best from the lot and space out their release. I don’t want my work to get lost in the digital space.

What are your plans?

M y expectations from upcoming projects are high. I give my best. There are a lot of projects in Bollywood but it’s best to talk about them once they are out. Let’s keep the surprise element intact. In Tollywood, I have sung for a couple of Bengali films like Jamai Badal and Haripada Bandwala, and being a Bengali I love singing in my language and would be happy to do more work here. However, I don’t think language matters for an artiste.
