In a recent interview with an international magazine, American rapper Pharrell Williams has denounced the song Blurred Lines that he co-wrote with Robin Thicke in 2013. Despite multiple allegations and people calling out the song to be sexist, and ‘kind of rapey’, Pharrell was the one who always stood his ground repeatedly in interviews that followed in the next couple of years. But it looks like the recent times have changed the writer's idea about how the song represents and speaks to women and men,
“I realised that there are men who use that same language when taking advantage of a woman, and it doesn't matter that that's not my behaviour," he has said in the interview, adding that he is embarrassed by the lyrics now. "My mind opened up to what was actually being said in the song and how it could make someone feel.", said the 46-year-old rapper. During its initial release, Blurred Lines had invited plenty of criticism for lyrics that perpetuated rape culture. Some parts of the song, like “I know you want it” was said to be triggering to women who had been subjected to sexual assault. It was observed that such usages trivialised the concept of consent and confuse the male observation regarding a woman's compliance with sex.
