Often referred to as India’s One Direction, there is no doubt about pop band Sanam’s huge fan following, especially among the young music enthusiasts. With stellar vocals and sound influenced by jazz and pop, this Mumbai-based band, led by popular vocalist Sanam Puri, has won hearts with their original content dedicated to friendship and love. Ahead of their debut performance in the city, Sanam says that the band has had ‘crazy’ experiences with the audience. “For each of us, something new keeps happening every other day. Once, a fan wrote letters to us in blood! Some of them follow us to every concert, even international ones, where they find out the hotel we are staying in and book a room close to us,” he recalls, admitting that the boy band loves the attention. Apart from Sanam, the outfit comprises his brother, Samar Puri (lyricist/lead guitar/composer), Venky S (bass guitar) and Keshav Dhanraj (drums/lead).

Although the band is popular for their videos on YouTube, Keshav tells us that their performance is more power-packed and fun. “Our live acts are quite different from what you would otherwise find on our channel. The songs will be the same, but the presentation is very different. We enjoy working out new and interesting ways to entertain our audiences at our concerts,” he says.

While Sanam made his Bollywood break with Dhat Teri Ki and Ishq Bulaava, the band started releasing original content, alongside cover songs and soon became one of the highest-watched indie music channels in India with over six million followers. Going ahead, they plan to produce more originals. “Originals are very dear to us. When I compose, I get attached to my melodies and it becomes a part of me. I need to be in a happy and positive state of mind to compose a track. As a collective, we are trying our best to explore new musical styles. However, we will not stop with the renditions as those songs have brought broken families together and have helped us spread love throughout the world with our music,” shares Sanam.
