Most people’s lives are under the public eye, thanks to social media. While there are some who prefer to stay away completely, there are others who overdo it. It’s this idea that American playwright William Missouri Downs has explored in his play Mad Gravity. City-based Quiver Productions stages this production for the first time in India.

“We were reading a lot of plays and scripts and that’s when we came across Mad Gravity. This story struck a chord with everyone because of the humour and we decided to stage it,” says Nishu Diskhit, lead producer of Quiver Productions. The story follows two families that include Archie and Eudora and their daughter Dakota, and Dr Joe and Mary, the other family. Dr Joe and Mary’s son has impregnated Dakota, and wants to marry her. So the doctor and his wife come over to the girl’s house to discuss this issue.

However, when the guests arrive, they are taken aback when they realise that theyare being watched by a live audience. Dakota’s parents have converted parts of their home into a live theatre set-up because they want someone to validate the significance of their lives and who better than a live audience. “The girl’s parents are progressive and epicurean by nature, while the boy’s parents are religious and conservative. The theme of this comedic farce revolves around the idea that people change as per the situations and true colours are revealed,” says Nishu.
