About 35 women are getting together this Sunday at Koramangala for the third edition of Loud Women, a theatre festival by and for women. For the uninitiated, this event explores women-centric themes through one-minute plays.
Looking within
Conceptualised and curated by Anita Mithra, founder, Tortilla Theatre Company, the third edition titled Loud Women - Rebel Edition - One Minute Theatre Festival presents 42 plays that explore four themes — Control, Toxic, Curves and Alone. “The themes are just the starting point of many ideas and conversations. In the last edition, we focused on women who were doing new things and exploring new territories. In this edition, women will initiate conversationson questions such as — are we doing enough for ourselves?” explains Anita. Through these performances, the artistes want to encourage the audience to look within themselves for answers and develop an attitude that helps them take care of themselves.
Among the performances to watch out for are Unfinished, a play about the attitude towardsdivorced women, Prince Charming, a story that encourages women to be their own prince charming, Leaning Tower and Twin Towers, both of which offer different looks at old age. “Even though, the format (one-minute each) is restrictive, we are looking at different ways to present them, such as voiceovers and silent plays,”
reveals Anita.
Getting topical
Specific topics fall under each theme, and participants will explore these topics individually. Parental control, control in relationships, self control and losing control come under ‘Control’. Other themes have some out-of-the-box topics. ‘Curves’ looks at subjects like stretchy and un-wanted curves. Under ‘Toxic’, audiences can expect productions with shayari and interactive plays. In addition to the performances, there will also be a special video presentation featuring plays from Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai.
“Many women who wanted to showcase their skills were keen that we take Loud Women to their respective cities. But since we haven’t done it yet, we have got some of these women to send their plays as video recordings, which will be screened at the festival,” signs off Anita.
