Films were a straight-forward ‘no’ for Sanchita Shetty just 12 years back, who is now a popular name in the Tamil film industry

SAnchita Shetty added to the glam quotient at the recently concluded Indulge Valentine’s Day bash. Attending the event in a sizzling red dress paired with cream colour heels, the actress clearly stole the show when she made her way to the stage. Sanchita also expressed how happy she was to see the young and older couples celebrate the occasion.

Having entered the Kannada film industry with a supporting role in Mungaru Male, Sanchita Shetty has come a long way since her debut in 2006. She was already a familiar face within the fraternity while making her debut in the Tamil film industry in 2012. She carved a niche for herself with her performance as Vijay Sethupathi’s imaginary girlfriend in Nalan Kumarasamy’s Soodhu Kavvum in 2013. Her role was appreciated by the critics and audience alike. The rest, as they say, is history.

Sanchita has her kitty full this year. The Pizza II actress will be seen as an IT employee opposite Azhar in Vignesh Karthick’s Yenda Thalaiyila Yenna Vekkala that releases today. Apart from this, Sanchita also stars in Venkat Prabhu’s multi-starrer titled Party alongside Jai, Shaam, Shiva, Sathyaraj, Jayaram, Nassar, Regina Cassandra, Ramya Krishnan and Nivetha Pethuraj.

Hailing from a background of theatre actors and bharatanatyam dancers, young Sanchita made her first stage appearance at the age of 10. “I don’t remember the title of the play, but I made my first appearance with a small role in my aunt’s (Uma Lakshmi) project,” says the 28-year-old actress. Sanchita, who was born and raised in Bengaluru, says films were never on her charts. “I was always inclined more towards dance than theatre. When I was in class 10, I used to conduct contemporary dance classes. Acting was still not on my list and within two years, when I cleared my grade 12, I made my debut in Mungaru Male,  which was well received. Then there was no looking back. But unfortunately, with such tight schedules, I don’t get to focus on my dance now,” she adds.

Sanchita confesses that she had a different perspective about her debut role in Mungaru Male. “I was always asked about my first role and I should be honest that I now have a different perspective about the same (laughs). Many in the industry regret when they play a small role, but I feel proud of my character. I was selected for a petite role. As the movie was a commercial success, I was also noticed in the film. I remember going to a pharmacy after the release of the film and someone from the store recognised me. That was an overwhelming moment,” she offers.

Recollecting how she initially refused the offer, she says, “One of my cousins came up with this offer and my first response to this was a ‘no.’ I was in class 12 and wanted to focus on my studies at that time.” Down the road, 12 years and 18 movies later, she remembers a recent conversation she had with her mother about her career. “It was around a week back when my mother was telling me how I refused to act in a film and how I am dealing with a packed schedule today,” she says with a smile.

When asked about whom she wants to work with the most, she says she has always wanted to work with just two people. “I want to work with Mani Ratnam and Rajinikanth. Mani Ratnam’s heroines are always different and they are noticed for their roles,” she adds.
