Empire star Jussie Smollett attacked in Chicago in suspected hate crime

Smollett was in Chicago ahead of a concert he was set to perform on Saturday.

Actor Jussie Smollett was hospitalised on Tuesday morning following an alleged hate crime attack in Chicago.

According to a statement released by the Chicago Police Department, the Empire star was beaten by two men who approached him by yelling out “racial and homophobic slur” at approximately 2 am on Tuesday morning. They reportedly proceeded to assault Smollett and “poured an unknown chemical substance” on him and wrapped a rope around his neck.

According to reports, detectives had ‘expanded the search area for cameras to be able to provide photos of the alleged assailants in this attack.’
 
Smollett was in Chicago ahead of a concert he was set to perform on Saturday. He had posted on Instagram late Monday night saying he had arrived in the city “after spending 7 hours on a plane for a 2 hour flight.”

A number of celebrities voiced support for the actor after the attack. Musician John Legend said on Twitter: “Sending love to Jussie and the Smollett family after this horrific attack. We support you and pray that you find peace and justice.”

Priyanka Chopra also posted an Instagram story: “Hate will never win. Thinking of you @JussieSmollett”.
