“Animated movies are for kids!”, is one myth that needs to be broken. There’s little doubt that they appeal the most to the little ones, but the characters and plot encompass emotions that everyone can relate to.

While they definitely get an ‘A’ in the entertainment segment, they also manage to pack a strong and bring imagination to the screen with top-notch graphics and animation. So here are Disney/ Pixar’s five recent Academy Award-winning animated movies to get you started on your path of eternal joy.

5. Moana: “In Ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the Demigod Maui reaches Moana’s island, she answers the Ocean’s call to seek out the Demigod to set things right.” The film, packaged as a folktale, succeeds to delight its audience with lovely music, powerful emotions and incredible animation and leave them laughing.

4. Big Hero-6: Prodigy Hiro Hamada develops a special bond with an inflatable robot after a life-changing incident. He teams up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes. The movie handles relationships very well and takes emotional as well as dark turns, that will lead the viewers to empathise with the characters.

3. Zootopia: “Judy Hopps, a little bunny who grew up on a farm, leaves her family to pursue her dream of being the first bunny cop in Zootopia, a city of anthropomorphic animals. She must work with a con artist fox, Nick Wilde, to uncover a conspiracy.” Filled with light humour, lovable characters, subtle messages and themes of stereotyping and prejudice, the movie is simply fun to watch.

2. Inside Out: “After young Riley is uprooted from Minnesota to San Francisco, her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness- conflict on how to navigate life in the new city.” The animated comedy beautifully conveys the power of emotions and that it is okay to not be happy all the time.

1. COCO: “Miguel, an aspiring musician, is confronted with his family’s ancestral ban on music. He accidentally enters the Land of the Dead, and sets out on a journey to find his great-great-grandfather.” Coco’s melodies are an added delight to the rich visuals and heart-warming narratives, which leave you tear-streaked. Disney/ Pixar’s musical fantasy film is centred around the vibrant Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead. The movie also won Best Song 2017 at the Oscars along with Best Animated Film.
