Theatre and film actor Arunava Dey is all set to premiere his first short film Projapoti on a public platform very soon. Dey, who has worked in a web series called Shei je Holud Pakhi (on Hoichoi app) and movie Tritya Adhyay has directed another short before, but this will be his first commercial venture.

Projapoti is the story of two girls, Ganga and Ahalya, their friendship, and their entry into womanhood. But life takes a series of disastrous turns, once they discover their feelings for each other.

Set in the backdrop of pre-independent India, the plot dates back to 1940s and revolves around two girls, who love each other but are estranged, due to circumstances. Yet they meet in another realm an alternate reality, which sets them free.

“Projapoti is a love story between two women and the narrative goes back and forth in time, using some sci-fi elements like the ‘butterfly effect,’ a  trope which is commonly used to go back in time and create alternate endings,” says Arunava, the director.

“The names of both the characters, Ganga and Ahalya have some relevance with their respective characters. Mythologically, Ahalya’s character, despite being very beautiful, was trapped in an unfulfilling relationship. Here too, the character played by Manjula Polley is stuck in an unhappy marriage; while Ganga, played by Tapati Munshi is someone who absorbs and absolves people’s negativity,” shares Arunava, who has also written the script.

“It took us four days to shoot this eighteen-minute film, but there is something very positive about our outlook. We are not trying to sermonize anything but the ending will definitely leave a smile on your face,” says the young director.

Cinematography has been done by Susovan Chakraborty and the background score has been composed by Kuntal Mitra. Jayeeta Roy is the producer and Tapash Chakraborty is the line producer. The younger Ganga has been played by Anusha Vishwanathan and younger Ahalya has been played by Kaushiki Chakraborty, while Bikash Bhowmick plays Ahalya’s husband and Feroz Shah plays his younger version.
