When food met art & yellow fever travelled from Chennai to Pune

My column has taken on a ‘Travel Diaries’ vibe, what with the rest of the IPL Chennai matches being shifted to Pune. As a result, this week saw me being part of a somewhat momentous occasion, getting the chance to accompany a bunch of hard core CSK fans aboard the ‘Whistle Podu Express’. Here’s the kicker — when I say ‘a bunch’ I’m talking about almost one thousand fans, making the long journey from Chennai to Pune to catch all the action, live. The atmosphere at Central Station was electric. A sea of yellow, all chanting and waving flags as they boarded the train, also draped in team colours for the occasion. In fact, the almost day-long expedition flew by in a whirl of dancing, singing, swapping of CSK stories and of course, lots of posting on social media.

Meanwhile, back in Chennai, the who’s who of the fashion industry had gathered for Sunil Menon’s photo exhibition, marking his 25 years in the business. Having been a part of the amazingly fun shoot myself, I’m not surprised that loads of people turned up at Amadavadi, both to check out the final product and well as to wish Sunil. While the man of the moment wanted it to be a relaxed casual affair, he wasn’t allowed to get away without saying a few words. His short speech included anecdotes from his journey over the years.

As for the photographs by Kapil, they were displayed chronologically, capturing the lighter moments of not just models, but designers and stylists too. The city saw a mix of food, music and beauty as well. A new makeup and hair studio was launched with a fashion show themed around Earth Day at Sommerset Greenways. Meanwhile, many of the younger models were seen at the launch of Innisfree, answering the call to action, by fellow model Mehndi Jashnani.

Of course the girls jumped right in, enjoying the one-on-one skin pampering over high tea. Next stop was at the Courtyard by Marriott where Food meets Art offered a range of lip-smacking creations, made even more interesting with an interactive twist. And finally the launch of PopOdax — ready-to-eat appalams, by the Lanson Group at the Taj Coromandel, saw the swish set in attendance. Anil Srinivasan and Saindhavi performed traditional pieces in keeping with the theme.
