There’s been a huge level of maturity and growth in LaSalle's character, says Lucas Black of NCIS

Lucas Black of NCIS: New Orleans talks about his favourite moments from the series, and how his character has evolved

Action seems to come naturally for American TV actor Lucas Black, going by his repertoire of films. In his career spanning 20-odd years, the actor has been a part of films like Sling Blade (1996), Flash (1997), The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) and TV shows like American Gothic (1995-1996). His biggest claim to fame on TV, however, has been as Christopher LaSalle in NCIS: New Orleans as a Special Agent who is a no-nonsense kind of guy with a ‘work hard, play hard’ motto. Created by Gary Glasberg, this procedural, set in New Orleans, follows the lives of Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) officers, who focus on crimes that involve personnel in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. As the fourth season goes on air, we speak to Lucas on what to expect from the show...

How would you describe the development of LaSalle in the series?
There’s been a huge level of maturity and growth in his character. Especially after the first season — he went off the deep end after his soon-to-be wife was killed in the first season, and there were a lot of things he was involved in, sexual immorality, trying to find his (mojo) — just grieving and really doing some bad things. And Pride (Supervisory Special Agent, and father figure to Black, played by Scott Bakula) stepped up and said something, and made him accountable for what he was doing in his life. So, there was definitely some growth in that area, where he chose not to be involved in that anymore, and hopefully to live pure from here on out.

What do we find out about LaSalle’s relationship with his father this season?
It’s kind of like his biological father, his dad, was trying to choose his own path, I guess, so-to-speak. He built his family business and he wanted to pass that on. But LaSalle decided that it wasn’t for him.
It was not what he wanted, and it didn’t fulfill him in his life. And, I think there was probably some troubled times there for LaSalle as a youngster.

How would you describe the role Pride has played in LaSalle’s life?
He was kind of that father-mentor I guess that LaSalle wished he had in his real father. So, he looked to Pride for answers and kind of grew up watching how he navigated life, and took some of that as a part of him. Then, he worked with Pride at NCIS, and their relationship just grew from there.

What are your three favourite Lasalle moments from Season 3?
The maturity level after the baby mama drama of Lasalle. Hopefully, he comes out of that being a stronger man — that’s one. Number two, was that I got to show off my drifting skills. In one of the episodes, we had a little race episode and that was fun. So, I got to burn rubber in the Ford F-150. And then I think, upcoming, I get to ride an ATV too. Third, is being able to have some fun with Sebastian (the forensic agent on the show), now out in the field and enjoying some comedic scenes with him. So, that’s been my favourite three moments.

NCIS: New Orleans Season 4 airs Saturday and Sunday at 10 pm only on AXN.
