After launching their standalone store in Khader Nawaz Khan road in November last year, brothers Siddharth and Ashish Gulecha of A Tailor’s Tale are coming up with a pop-up named The Spring Fling at their store. The label that had its last pop-up in 2016 at Amethyst is back, and it’s much bigger and better. Known for their exquisite designer collections of clothing, bags, and accessories, A Tailor’s Tale is also a complete vegan label with zero leather products.
“This pop-up is an opportunity to spread the word about our newly opened store,” says 27-year-old Siddharth. Themed around the Spring season, the store will bring together 23 labels from across the country. While familiar labels like Manika Nanda (New Delhi), Zevar by Geeta(NCR) andYellowsoles(Chennai) are expected, there are a few making their Chennai debut too.

Black is beautiful
Delhi-based designer Nitya Bajaj (launched in 2011) makes her Chennai debut with her Spring Summer 2018 collection, Fragments. “With the dominance of the colour black, this collection speaks about the beauty in the dark, difficult times while celebrating life, as portrayed by pop colours on colour-blocked prints,” explains the designer. The collection has a mix of black flared skirts, with intricate lacework and a dash of colour on each piece. Oversized coats with palazzos and metal belts also make up Nitya’s collection.

Going organic
Meanwhile, Shveta Narula, founder of the Gurugram-based label Inweave (launched in 2016) sounds enthusiastic about her foray into the Chennai market. “I will be presenting designs from my Linen Passion and Crushed Ombre collection,” says Shveta. “The focus will be on block prints and Kalamkari motifs and these pieces can be both worn as partywear and casual wear.” The past year has seen a rise in sustainable clothing with labels finding materials like jute, hemp, bamboo and pineapple-based fabrics. Keeping in sync with that trend, A Tailor’s Tale has roped in Kolkata-based Door of Maai, which launched in 2015. Puja Goenka, operations head says the pieces from the latest collection named Jarhead, are made with GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic cotton. “We have colours like rusty pink, charcoal, ashen grey and navy blue which are our brand’s staples,” says Puja.

Another label that’s coming to town is Mumbai-based Shruti Ranka who retails in contemporary womenswear and who launched in 2012. "Our collection, The Summer Tribe is inspired by fresh summer hues. It’s about vibrant embellishments with cuts and drapes,” says Shruti. They have experimented with a fusion of Chanderi, Cotton satin, and crinkled cotton.  Fashion lovers can also watch out for the Vadodara-based label AlterEgo (launched in 2016), with their capsule summer collection Into the Woods, made with khadi and Cora cotton on display.”
