Reds and fuschias give way to reams of pastel-hued fabrics, while mannequins sport elegant designs in neutral shades at the city’s newest boutique Urban Kalika. While a pared-down aesthetic is not what the four-month bespoke store attempts at, founder Muthu Kumar says he is jaded with the contrasting hued trend that flooded the market over the past year and is attempting to bring co-ords back into vogue. “The simplistic elegance of the fabric and its surface design technique can often be overshadowed by a hue,” explains the 35-year-old who has a background in interior design and worked as a colour consultant. An extension of his design aesthetic, the 1,200 sq ft store located at RS Puram is a mix of urban chic and traditionalism. With textured grey walls that are offset by wooden floors and traditional black and white Athangudi tiles, each element of the interiors highlights the apparel that the store houses.

Geared towards a clientele that loves its statement pieces without being over the top, the boutique lays emphasis on hand detailing and looks at introducing the city to experimental silhouettes. “Though we don’t admit it, the city is not very open towards experimenting with its style. We still love our saris and one way to contemporise things is to experiment with the styling of the blouse.” Look out for the label’s co-ord parrot green plain soft silk sari that is paired up with a hand embroidered blouse with bead detailing.

While the brand celebrates its customisation capabilities for both ethnic and western silhouettes, Urban Kalika also offers a prêt range that includes kurtis, skirts, dresses and lehengas for women and apparel for toddlers and girls.

Rs 1,000 upwards.
