Designer Sumridhi Ganeriwal, who recently launched her label in Hyderabad has a knack for creating traditional clothes with international influences.  The alumnus of Instituto Europeo di Design, Milan, started working on her collection as soon as she graduated last year. The 25-year-old who has worked at Milan Fashion Week and has had a stint with master Italian designer Gianfranco Ferré, gets her weaves from designers in Benaras and works with artisans at home in Hyderabad. Offering a global feel with a desi twist, the designer has already created a buzz among the fashion-forward folks of the city and can be reached on Instagram for orders.

Of forests and myths
Sumridhi’s debut Spring/Summer collection is called ‘Tãne’. As she shows us one of her stylish lehengas, she explains, “I have taken the inspiration from The Maori mythology which originated in New Zealand.‘Tãne’ is the God of forests and birds, and is also known as the creator of women in that myth,” she says. And that’s why we see a predominant presence of nature-related motifs on her designs. While she mostly uses silk and Chanderi, the use of Benarasi weaves is one of the highlights of her collecion.  The budding designer has employed smart design hacks to ensure that her made-to-measure garments can be broken down and every piece can be used by themselves. For instance, the blouse to go with the lehenga can be worn with a sari as well. Moreover, she has made sure that she creates outfits to flatter most body types. Talking about her inspirations, the Hyderabadi girl says British designer Alexander McQueen  and the queen of Parisian chic Elsa Schiaparelli  as  the ones she looks up to. “I love how wacky Schiaparelli could get with her designs,” she says.

Smart designs
Her ensembles look almost diaphanous and intricate because of the delicate embroidery. “There is a lot of draping work in collection,” says the designer who will soon be showcasing her work in Milan again. Also, in her latest collection, one can look out for a lot of capes and cocktail numbers as well, apart from Indian ensembles. Ace Hyderabadi designer Shilpa Reddy, who we met at the launch, also praised Sumridhi’s emphasis on Indian craft and her “clever design”. “In today’s day and age, when people don’t want to repeat an outfit too many times, this is a very smart way of design. You can style her outfits in your way, wherein your personality comes across,” added Shilpa.
