Vummidi Bangaru Jeweller’s latest collection Persiana will remind you of the vault from an old church and dome of a mosque. All of these imageries reflect in the structural detailing of the ornaments through 15 select motifs.

What makes the collection distinctive is the Plique-á-jour enamelling technique. We are told that this is the first time it is being used in India. It takes inspiration from the designs painted on the glass walls of church doors and windows. It is known for its transparent nature of letting light pass through the enamel. This compliments the precious stones and diamonds that are skilfully placed within the soft curvilinear patterns. “We knew the design was successful when 60 per cent of our prototypes got sold. Expect an extension of this line,” says Jithendra Vummidi,  Managing Director of VBJ.

Their stand-out pieces of Matti Jhumka (earrings with hair extension and a clip-on), Haath-Phool (bracelet), Maang Tikka (hair ornament) and Baaju Bandh (armlet) are an example. With an enamel palette dominated by azure, turquoise and Persian blue, the glossy coating is embellished with diamonds, pearls and tanzanite stones. “The enamel coating is so realistic that people actually mistake it for embedded semi-precious stones. Our design studios have microscopes to help designers focus better on to the intricate patterns,” shares Jithendra.  Another interesting part is the clasp. It is designed in such a way that one pearl has a hole drilled into it, while the other has a tiny bar. As the bar slips into the hole, the piece gets locked. This way, the lock remains inside and does not disturb the outer look. Two teams have been working in tandem for the collection. Once the creative team comes up with a set of designs, they are passed on to the studio team. A total of 50  members work here.

Further adding on to the conversation, Jithendra tells us, “Boundaries are blurring and people are willing to try new designs.” Having said that, their next line is a bridal collection, which will be launched by the April end.

Rings start at `25,000.
