A seasonal spin: Samasta's newly expanded boutique offers new silhouettes

After a successful run of six years, Samasta has grown steadily with its celebrity clientele, movie stylists and people from different walks of life. Chennai-based designer Mrudulika Menon started Samasta in 2012, just a couple of years after retailing saris designed by her mother Arundhati Menon who founded the sari store Shilpi, back in the 1980s. Arundhati, a veteran in the industry worked with artisans across the country and has brought handloom weaves from different parts of the country to Chennai. “ Our clients always wanted to buy saris designed by my mother. We’ve brought in more weaves, blouses and cholis with our new summer collection. Hence the demand for a larger space to showcase our creations,” says Mrudulika.
The newly expanded boutique at Alwarpet will be 440 sq ft. And the boutique will have a special segment to showcase works of artisans and upcoming designers. Delhi-based Ritu Mehta’s Karigar Weaves was the first to display their work at Samasta. Designer Ritu Mehta unveiled a vibrant collection of hand-block printed saris, unstitched fabrics and dupattas in tussars on March 25.

What’s new?
From Uppada to tahlias, the store has an extensive collection of weaves and other Indo Western outfits. “ Mrudulika has learnt  a lot about handloom and textiles over the last few years. The collection she has created is perfect for young and contemporary women. These are heirloom pieces that will continue to remain classic even years later. We’ve been lucky to work with some of the best crafts persons across the country. Our latest is a summer wear from Lucknow. These are made of fabrics that are light, easy to breathe and keep you refreshed throughout the day,” says designer Arundhati who believes that traditional pieces are classic and eternal.

Alongside apparel there will also be a line of silver accessories by Bengaluru-based Flames of the Forest, semi-precious jewellery by Serendip boutique and brass jewellery by Kayel. The latest addition will be Mrudulika’s readymade line in Chanderi and Maheswari for special occasions and cotton and tussar for working women. “We also have an exciting range in stoles featuring kantha work, shibori on gajji silk and handwoven eri silk stoles from Eco Tasar,” explains Mrudulika whose collection extends to pants, skirts and shararas.
Beyond drapes
Check out their long kurtas in straight styles, princess cuts and Kalidar styles. On the Western end, they’ve got you covered with flowy skirts, crop tops, tunics and dresses. “While we have long kurtas that go well with palazzos we also have skirts that are great for summer,” says Mridulika, evcen as she emphasises on the importance of saris. Speaking about the future plans, Mrudulika shares, “We might get into sleep and resort wear. I would love to design for children using Indian fabrics in Indo-Western styles,” Samasta has another outlet in Kottupuram. They also plan to expand across South India soon.

Saris start from `1,480.
