Barely two months old and streetwear brand Jaywalking already has the likes of Ranveer Singh among its patrons. While the 26-year-old Jay Ajay Jajal doesn’t want to name-drop just as yet, he tells us that he has been in touch with multiple celeb stylists over the last month—the details of which the design school dropout is tight-lipped about. “Surprisingly, as soon as the brand launched we had enquiries for sourcing. However, Ranveer was the first celebrity to wear Jaywalking for the promotions of Gully Boy,” says Jay, who hopes to create a niché for Indian streetwear that is influenced by hip-hop.

New take
Inspired by designer Jay’s, personal journey, the brand places utmost importance on fit and comfort. “I’m a plus-sized person and have always had to customise and tailor-make my clothes. Never have I been able to walk into Zara or H&M and buy pants and t-shirts, because none of them would fit me right. Come to think of it, the brand has been a long time in the coming.”

Favouring tailored garments that are in variance to the conventional streetwear silhouettes like tracksuits, straight-legged denims and hoodies, Jaywalking’s debut line includes high-waisted pants, over-sized yet structured jackets and bell-bottom jeans. “I think my aesthetic is more about the fit that people should wear on the street.”

High contrast
A gender-neutral brand, Jaywalking’s colour palette is based on the designer’s love for contrasts. Neons feature prominently in the collection and sit alongside earthy base colours like navy blue, grey, olive and brown.

Using a range of materials from reflective fabrics and neoprene to velvet corduroy and even suiting material, the collection makes use of graphic design, fabric patchwork, exploratory trimmings and utility pockets as a part of its surface design.

Looking to the future, jewellery and sneakers are certainly on the cards, but the newest silhouette that is set to drop on the brand’s Instagram page in the next couple of weeks are the custom-made t-shirts. “I have the designs for the sneakers ready, but that will only release after the t-shirt range that will be unveiled, either, later this month or early next month.”

Available online. Rs 6,000 upwards.
