When Mumbai-based Sangeet Paryani floated the idea of opening a store catering exclusively to sneakerheads amongst his family and friends, the response he got was not too encouraging. “‘Would a store like this take off?’ and ‘The sneaker culture in India is still at a very nascent stage’ were some of the questions and arguments I was met with,” says Sangeet. However, he went ahead and set up SuperKicks over a year ago, which today, has long queues and people camping overnight outside its entrance every time there’s an announcement of a new limited edition drop. On Saturday, the shop opens its doors in Indira Nagar, giving local enthusiasts a much-needed destination for exclusive, one-of-a-kind shoes.

“I got my hands on my current favourite pair of shoes, the Adidas x Pharell Williams Hu Holi Tennis Hu MC Shoes, after four days of searching for them. I found some sellers online but they were quoting double the original price. I finally got someone to stand in line at the store in London and ship it to India. With SuperKicks opening here, it might not be so difficult,” says Omran Hamza, who works at CoWrks, and is part of the ever-growing number of  sneakerheads. “The sneaker culture in Bengaluru is going mainstream. So the Mumbai store coming to the city is just what we needed,” says Gokul M, a communications professional who has over 100 shoes, among which are a pair from the Puma X Karl Lagerfeld collaboration and another, a Puma X Boris Becker pair personally signed by the German tennis legend.

The 950-square-feet store screams edgy and off-beat with its bare and cement-hued interiors, which serve as the perfect canvas for the striking collection to come alive. “We will stock a mix of limited edition, general re-releases and retro shoes. Think Adidas Originals Yeezy Boost, retro Reebok classics and Nike Air Jordans. In addition, we will also have accessories such as caps, backpacks and socks, and apparel from Adidas, Nike and Reebok. One brand that I would like to highlight is Ylati, an Italian label known for its handmade sneakers, which are available in India exclusively at SuperKicks,” says Sangeet, whose family business of importing sports shoes sparked his interest in collecting rare pairs.

Besides catering to the needs of sneaker collectors through their carefully curated collection, Sangeet also plans to host events at the store. “It’s a community building exercise as much as it is a store. So we will be hosting rap and hip-hop events, sneaker carnivals and raffles, just like we do in our Mumbai outlet,” he says, signing off.

Rs.3,000 upwards. The store opens tomorrow. At 12th Main, Indira Nagar
