Blue Beetle Creations is less than a year old, but Beena Thomas, the designer behind the jewellery label, has been creating pieces for as long as she can remember. A trained interior designer, Beena over the years, dabbled in art forms like stained glass and pottery but always found herself returning to jewellery. Sometime last year, a friend sat her down and advised her to start her own label or at least give it a shot, and that’s when she set up her website and e-store. “I am an extensive traveller and I used to drive around in a blue Beetle, that’s where the name comes from,” explains Beena, who splits her time between Bengaluru and Frankfurt.

Describing her aesthetic, Beena says, “People have told me that my designs are Boho and offbeat, but I just create what strikes me as appealing. I don’t try to stick to a particular style.” Collected from her travels to cities like London, Budapest and Amsterdam, the raw material she employs vary from semi-precious stones to ceramic, crystals, glass, metal, wood and bone. “Some-times, I meet the artist and buy the material directly from them. For instance, for my line of blown glass ornaments, I met the artist in London and he explained how he makes the blown glass beads and what he did to get it to look the way it did,” shares Beena. The stones are sometimes set in silver, but most often than not, the metals used are sterling, and silver-coated copper.

Some of the most striking pieces on her website include the ‘Lampwork’ earrings made with powder blue cylindrical beads (sourced from one of her favourite stores in London) and the Amethyst Chip necklace which uses amethyst, pearls and metal.
