Cardboard turns into exquisite jewellery in Metanoia by Eurumme

For her collection, Gild, from two years ago, designer, Eishita Puri, of jewellery label, Eurumme, found beauty in bare trees, brown and dark against grey winter skies. So it started with twigs and dry leaves. Yes, she did dip them in gold to give them a dash of glamour and sophistication, but her fascination for experimenting with unusual raw material to create jewellery didn’t stop there. Now, for the Spring/Summer 2019 season, she introduces Metanoia, a collection of earrings, necklaces, finger rings, nose rings, maang tikas and bracelets, made from repurposed cardboard. “It’s always been important for me to push the envelope and do things differently and this collection is the result of that,” shares Eishita, who clients include Swara Bhasker, Freida Pinto and Richa Chadha.

Metanoia, which in Greek means ‘to change one’s purpose’, is a handcrafted collection that draws from Mesopotamian jewellery styles with a focus on metallic gold, silver, rose gold and gunmetal. Fashioned out of thick, hard cardboard, the designs are dipped in brass metal, which make them unbreakable. The pieces are then given the finishing touches.

“Apart from the backs of earrings, hooks and clasps, the collection is completely made from cardboard,” says the Mumbai-based designer. Some of Eishita’s favourite pieces from the line include a set of stackable rings and a  single golden hoop earring. “It’s oversized but very simple,” she explains. With a design story hinged on concentric circles contrasted by lines and spaces, Metanoia is a compelling creation that is both current and classic. “I would say the pieces are bold but not overly intricate, so that makes them quite versatile and easy to wear,” she says in conclusion.
