Chambray and Co, an Ahmedabad-based label has recently launched its resort wear collection in light-weight, regenerated fabrics such as cotton and linen, which uses natural dyes from fruits, berries, minerals and roots to add colour to each of the garments.

The four-year-old label is largely inspired by nature and uses natural products, to move a step further in its motto of sustainable fashion. Most of the Khadi and linens come from the handlooms of Gujarat, which uses cotton from the most water-efficient fields in India.

“The collection Play taps into the cheerful and playful nature associated with summers. Each of the garments in this collection is inspired by the people I met on a recent trip to the UK and Scandinavia. Play especially captures the mood of the countryside, hence the names like Bella, Bianca and Delilah,” says Esha Agarwal, a NIFT graduate.

The silhouettes in solid colours, are fluid and comfortable and explore statement sleeves like bishop, bell, circular flounce, choir boy and cuff sleeves. You can easily find something very feminine, like the noodle strap dress, which can be teamed up with a jacket, or worn as separates or something outlandish and boho-chic like the white cotton crepe high-neck top with front pleats. There’s also a tomboyish boxy crepe shirt, in mustard and the sheer parka style top with frills in pepper silk, a special variety of silk made from regenerated bamboo fibre.

There are line vests, bomber jackets with a tie-up detailing and a double-breasted blazer with cold shoulders, for those who like to stock up on uncommon pieces for a special day. Their simple kimono dresses and linen dresses with vertical infinity cut at the back, are a refreshing change too, not to forget the linen shorts, high-waisted trousers with paper bag effect in solid colours.

“We have tried to make the sustainable fashion a little more light-hearted and colourful by adding age-old techniques liked pleating and faggoting seams to the dresses, in a completely new way,” Esha informs.

“Our collection is specially targeted towards the creative, intelligent, urban woman, who has a genuine passion for aesthetics and humanity and doesn’t mind experimenting with her clothes, or how she wears them. Each of our pieces gives you the freedom to style and interpret it in an unorthodox way every time,” she tells us.

Esha herself has worked with Manish Arora, a designer who is known for his individualistic take on everything and takes inspiration from his school of thought. “Fashion for me is more about the artistic expression of your personal style,” says Esha. “My personal sense of style is quite androgynous and frumpy, and I love to borrow pieces from both my mother’s and my husband’s wardrobe and interpret them as I see fit,” she adds.
