It wouldn’t be farfetched to draw parallels between the annual Tussar Festival at the Silkworm Boutique and the winter solstice. “I think it would be fair to say that the festival does signal the end of summer for us in Chennai,” jokes founder, Hisham Osman, further explaining that this fabric is best woven during the winter months. Running into the eighth year since its inception, the festival will put on display some of the finest tussar from the North East, Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and even Telangana.

Working with clusters, the store stocks up on drapes sourced directly from weavers and offers geometric prints and floral motifs that are typical to the textured silk. “These weavers work with little to no additional design intervention and create classic pieces that have been passed down through generations,” he says, talking about a range of saris and running fabrics that comes in myriad shades, from cream and black to bold pinks and even mauves. However, the selection doesn’t just end there. For those looking for something a little more contemporary, rather than just the classics, Silkworm Boutique has collections by two Kolkata-based labels — Weavers Studio and Karomi, as well.

Known for their tussar blends, the saris from Weavers Studio are teeming with roller prints, screenprints, hand block prints and even resist-dyed batiks and hand-embroidered Kantha in vibrant jewelled toned hues. “Karomi, on the other hand, offers a subdued, earthy toned palette.” Working extensively on the jamdani weave, the collection from Karomi will include pieces that are inspired by the Bauhaus style and Gamcha checks.

Saris from Rs 3,000 onwards. The Tussar festival will go on at the Silkworm Boutique until the end of  December.
