For 32-year-old Sumiya Sulthana, designing has been a passion all her life. A doctor by profession, she started her label Pixeeduzzt barely six months ago. “I believe what we wear brings out the magic in us. My brand was born after years of admiring fashion trends and pairing it with my flair for comfort,” says Sumiya, who loves to work with clients and create customised pieces than pre-stiched garments. “I have found that customers are happiest when they have contributed to how a piece is made. As a designer, I just put it together in the best possible way,” she adds. The latest collection from her label, Pastel Magic, features fine craftmanship in lightweight saris and salwars. Their stitching unit in Thiruvananthapuram has local artisans who specialise in hand embroidery work, perfecting each piece of garment.

Bead me to it
Apart from the use of subtle yet contrasting shades, Pastel Magic stands out for the lightweight georgette and organza material. “These fabrics are soft and flow perfectly with the shape of your body. They are also easy to carry. Organza is becoming increasingly popular in India and abroad now,” Sumiya adds. Instead of scattering, which is a popular trend for designer wear, she incorporates cut beads and sugar beads to bring in floral embellishments. Sequence and resham thread embroidery has also been used alternatively to bring out elegant pieces. Lucknowi chikan saris in ombre shades with meticulous thread work are the highlight of this line that can be worn as either as breezy resort wear when paired with fine jewellery, or as party wear, paired with precious stones or pearls.

Wonder weave
Pixeeduzzt also has a parallel collection that features Kashmiri embroidery on white organza saris. Colourful aari or crewel embroidery on the thick border woven into off-white or white saris give these pieces an extremely elegant look. The upcoming collection from this brand would also feature customised statement sleeves. “Puff sleeves have definitely made a comeback and I am working on using more of that on upcoming designs,” she says. Lantern, long bell, and pagoda sleeves are also used to give the outfits a contemporary twist.
