We met sisters Geetanjali (33) and Gyaneshwari Raikar (30) recently at a sustainable fashion pop-up held recently in the city. What drew us towards their showcase were the colourful earrings and brooches with fun adages inscribed on them, which the millennials might find relatable.

The duo, who helms the city-based accessory label Chidiaghar, is currently working on their latest designs to be exhibited this September and is all set to release a new bunch of edgy earrings, badges, magnets and tote bags. Also, as the name of the label suggests, most of their designs are influenced by a member of the animal kingdom and at the heart of the label are ideas of sustainability. “Recycling has always been the motive behind Chidiaghar,” says Gyaneshwari, adding, “We started experimenting with soda bottle caps then went to tin can tops, which made for excellent pendants. We have also upcycled cardboard and plastic in some of our latest work.” The sisters also love naming their work, making them more memorable in the process, such as Cotton Candy and Owlets. For their latest collections this season, they are also concentrating on hand-painted tote bags crafted from the canvas which is a durable plain-woven fabric.

Geetanjali shares that the plan is also to work more on bags as they provide a better site for their art. Most of them follow a monochrome palette although there are occasional colourful ones as well and often have pop-culture inspired etchings. Their new range of totes under the name ‘Whimsical’ is inspired by all fictional characters, especially from the work of Japanese animator and founder of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki. The sisters confess in unison that they are big fans of this renowned filmmaker.

That apart, if you are looking for knick-knacks then you can pick up the car-shaped fridge magnet made from bottle caps, moulded with epoxy clay and painted with acrylic. Their latest earring section, called ‘Ear Art’ boasts edgy statement pieces that can definitely add some spunk to your getup. For instance, their blue kettles painted, which the sisters have named Adda or those with hanging snail-replicas called that they call Chim-Poo grabbed our attention.
