The Vista Alegre
The Vista Alegre

Portugal-based The Vista Alegre has a history deeply steeped in tradition. The porcelain factory was founded in 1824/ Throughout its career the brand has been associated with the history and cultural life of Portugal, having acquired a great international reputation for excellence. Jose Ferreira PInto  a leading figure in the Portuguese society of the 19th century, farm owner, daring marketer and a politician, was decisive. He was an illustrious man, protector of the arts, education and charities, who occupied a prominent position in the Portuguese society of the 19th century.  In 1812, he started by buying Quinta da Ermida (farm), near the town of Ílhavo and close to the Ria de Aveiro (stream). Shortly after, he also bought the surrounding land, which included Quinta da Vista Alegre, with a palace, a chapel and several buildings built around a large square, where he ordered the factory to be built. just 5 years after its founding, Vista Alegre received the title of Real Fábrica (Royal Factory), in recognition of its art and industrial success.

The Real Fábrica da Vista Alegre (Royal Factory of Vista Alegre) started manufacturing glass, with glass pieces in relief, with engravings and forest patterns of a highly appreciated quality, which soon recorded great success. For the manufacturing of porcelain, it still took a long learning period, considering that this was a new industry in the country and given the difficulty in finding the necessary raw materials. The History of Vista Alegre Plate painted by por Victor Rousseau (1836 – 1851) In 1832, a stroke of luck predestined the production of porcelain in Portugal to success. A kaolin deposit was found, located in Aveiro, close to the Ílhavo factory, which made it relatively easy to transport. Meanwhile, the Founder hired craftsmen and skilled labour, committed to producing fine quality porcelain, and so he built more furnaces. The contribution of foreign artists such as Victor C. Rousseau was important, especially for the creation of a painting school, still famous today. Thus began a long Portuguese tradition of porcelain art.  From 1947 to 1968, international contacts, the training of specialized technical staff and the acquisition of other companies, led Vista Alegre to the expected technical and industrial development as well as the expansion of the offer to new markets. When the Factory reached maturity it started providing technical and artistic support to other European factories
In May 2001 the merger of Vista Alegre Group with Atlantis took place, thus forming the largest national group of Tableware and 6th largest in the world, in this sector: Vista Alegre Group.
