Edgy yet elegant, Kunal Rawal’s creations have been worn by B Town’s latest sensations including Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor. Known for his flair to bring contemporary twists to traditional attires like kurta—think deconstructed bandhgala jackets dotted with intricate hand embroidery—Kunal is excited as he teams up with Ranbir Kapoor once again for Jagga Jasoos.“I would say that Ranbir and I share the same aesthetic inclinations. It’s been visible in our previous collaborations including Besharam 2,” begins Kunal, adding that the actor is one of his muses. However, creating outfits for an Anurag Basu film is a whole new ball game according to the 30-something. “The thing about working with him is that there are no references to follow. We had to begin from scratch,” explains the couturier, whose ensemble features grungy pieces freckled with elements of camouflage.

Get grungy
While wearability remains his prime focus, Kunal confirms to the notions of sustainable fashion through the use eco-friendly fabrics. Painstakingly sourced from cities including Guwahati, the materials in Ranbir’s wardrobe for the film showcases cotton and linen blends along with textured fabrics. “The use of grunge in this particular film isn’t about fashion alone, but the film’s immediate settings. Since Ranbir’s character is always on the go, influences of the trend came in naturally,” he shares, adding the realistic quality of Anurag’s films challenges and intrigues him at the same time.
Apart from cargos, digital watches and cardigans, the actor’s costumes will sport bomber jackets, blousons and military chic jackets put together by Kunal. A departure from the kaleidoscopic colours associated with ‘youth’, style enthusiasts can expect a muted colour palette in this LCF (London College of Fashion) alumni’s collection. As for his future plans, Kunal tells us that he will be coming out with his prêt and couture lines within the next couple of months. Meanwhile, watch out of his creations Arjun Kapoor’s upcoming movie Mubarakan.

Jagga Jasoos releases on July 14.
