Every year, a long forgotten trend makes its way back to the ramp in a grand way. For those who’ve been watching closely, the influence of romance showcased at Paris Fashion Week by labels including US-based Rodarte is a happy twist. As the bridal season draws close, homegrown designers too are getting in on the action. Though Varun Bahl admits to being smitten by the general mood, his take on the trend strays off the beaten path. “Romance is a big part of all my garments this time. But, the focus is on detailing and craftsmanship that define feminine beauty of the modern woman, who revisits her tradition and amalgamates it with classic and contemporary styles,” Varun tells us.Inspired by art and architecture, Varun’s Fall/ Winter line to be showcased at the 10th edition of India Couture Week is influenced by the flamboyant era of 1890-1910. “When I was planning my collection, structures like the House of Gaudi and La Sagrada Familia played a big role in structuring the silhouettes. These designs are also heavily influenced by Czech artist and painter Alphonse Mucha  from the 1800s, whose traditional bohemian sensibilities and Neoclassical motifs spoke to me and helped give voice to my personal style,” explains the designer.

Elaborating further on his travels to Europe, the Delhi-based couturier cites examples of artworks—like The Seasons (1896), and The Flowers (1898) by the artist—playing a vital role in giving a feminine touch to his designs. “The natural floral lines, curvilinear patterns and asymmetrical lines showcased in my pieces reflect these paintings,” Varun shares. While the element of drama is guaranteed with the presence of exquisite drapery and layering done using silk and tulle on lehengas and saris, this NIFTian’s mood board features his signature shades like ivory, burnt orange, pistachio and vintage old rose. As for motifs,“florals have been a constant source of inspiration,” claims Varun, adding that hand embroideries and bead work will dominate the collection.

Varun’s  collection will be showcased today at Taj Palace, NewDelhi
