This isn’t the first time that Jaipur-based brand Amrapali’s designs have made an appearance onscreen. From The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel to Ram Leela to the blockbusters Baahubali 1 and 2, the heritage jewellers have contributed different pieces in different styles.
With Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika about to release next week, the Amrapali tribe has decided to launch a capsule collection of about 955 pieces in about 700 styles. When it comes to her look, she pulls off not just the vintage shades, the pristine whites and the pretty pastels with panache, but also the dark dual tones — each emphasising a different stage in her life as Rani Laxmibai. She can be seen carrying off the exquisite Raani haar and Kohlapuri Saaj set during her wedding, while in others she flaunts a simple Dholki bead necklace.
“We have been an integral part of Manikarnika, where our jewellery was synchronised to fit every character and the larger-than-life sets and scenes,” says Rajiv Arora and Rajesh Ajmera, co-founders of Amrapali Jaipur. “Our designers and artisans have worked tirelessly for over a year to achieve the desired aesthetics that the script demanded.” It took 30 karigars and almost two years to create an expansive collection, and they were inspired by everything from the art to the architecture of the Maratha region.
Designer Neeta Lulla was roped in to epitomise the dual persona of Rani Laxmibai, a majestic queen and a fearless warrior. The jewellery was meticulously handcrafted in gold plated silver. From royal sarpechs which is a turban ornament, to the Maharashtrian nath to the choker-style necklace Thushi, expect to find exquisite pieces at this exhibition.
