Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters started small  by selling their coffee online and at a few restaurants. But slowly, their coffee, sourced from Chikmagalur, was one of the first to kickstart an independent coffee revolution in India, which led them to setting up cafes across the country. Last week, the roastery finally opened its doors in Bengaluru, in a quaint bungalow in Koramangala.“Bengaluru has always been at the back of our minds and an important goal for us in 2018. We’re extremely grateful that we happened to chance upon this beautiful bungalow. We could envision our roastery inside it the second we saw it,” says Apurva Ghoshal, community manager at the roastery. We paid a visit to the outlet for a caffeine fix.

Their coffee menu is divided into hot and cold sections. From the hot section, we tried the Chili Cinnamon Mocha. Made with handmade, organic chocolate from Mason and Co., this drink was rich, creamy and easily our favourite. Other hot coffee choices include the Pour Over, Cortado and Sea Salt Mocha. From the cold section, we opted for a classic Iced Latte and their signature Cold Brew Coffee. The bottled cold brew is available in options such as light and bold. The bold option had nutty and cocoa notes. We also recommend the Coffee Tonic (espresso and tonic water) and Nitro Coffee. They also have a Coffee Play Bar where you can try your hands at the different manual brewing techniques.

We were curious to try their flatbreads so we started with the Romesco on Sourdough. The bread was topped with a Spanish nut- and pepper-based sauce, and charred tomatoes. Next, we tried the Marinated Chicken and Charred Red Peppers. The chicken and the smokey peppers were a good combination. Although all flavours were on point, we found the bread to be soggy in both the dishes. Also on the table was the Falafel Flat-bread — smashed coriander falafel with pumpkin hummus served on pita-style bread. This is a great vegan option.

The menu also has an all-day breakfast menu, salads such as Pea, Mint and Lemon, and Buddha Bowls with options such as the Spiced Lamb Bowl and the Asian Protein Bowl. Should you want dessert, try their Energy Balls or the Raw Cacao and Espresso Brownie. Although roasteries in the city, have already carved a niche of their own, Blue Tokai is happy to have competition. “In fact, we don’t see them as competition at all, but as a culture that’s slowly growing,” Apurva sums up.
