SodaBottleOpenerWala’s Navroz feast promises traditional favourites

The first day of Navroz or the Parsi New Year may be behind us, but celebrations continue until the middle of next month at SodaBottleOpenerWala. The Bombay Irani Cafe offers diners what they call ‘Navroz Dronu’ which is the traditional bhonu or Parsi feast, but with unlimited cocktails and sangria.

The special menu includes a non-vegetarian and a vegetarian platter, with traditional Navroz must-haves. We visited on a weeknight to soak in the festivities. From the non-vegetarian thali, which comprises Chicken Pattice, Mutton Masala ni Daal and Prawns Patio besides rice, rotli and salad, we enjoyed the prawns. Tangy, slightly sweet and a touch spicy, the traditional dish ticked all the boxes. Crispy and crumbly on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside, the Chicken Pattice was mildly spiced, with the umami flavour of the meat coming through. The mutton dish, rich and flavoursome, paired well with the fluffy and buttery Peas Pulao.

The rotli or roti, made with ragi, is best eaten with the Malai Mava nu Paneer from the vegetarian thali. Creamy and thick, this may not be for everyone, thanks to its slightly sweet notes, but it is interesting. Cheese and Veg Pattice, with a crispy and golden brown casing and filled with stretchy cheese, is worth every bite. The quintessential Parsi dessert, Lagan Nu Custard, along with a serving of Falooda brought the meal to a close.

For those looking for something unique and modern, this may not be the place for you. But if you’re in the mood for authentic flavours and dishes executed to perfection, make sure you head to this restaurant before April 15.

Rs.625++ upwards. At Lavelle Road
