Two years after the last Home Baker’s Guild Annual Bake Sale — there’s a fresh crop of baking enthusiasts carrying the torch forward. With a slightly different name and curated list of close to 300 sweet and savoury baked goods, look out for The Great Madras Bake Sale this weekend. Expect community-specific themes such as Sri Lankan and Anglo Indian bakes, vegan and keto alternatives and alcohol-infused cakes that one might only otherwise find at Christmas time.

Who moved my cookie?
Put together by Cindana Manickavel (Sugar Monkeys), Maaria Kulsum Tanveer (Cafe Adoniya), Anu Prosper (Chamber of Sugar) and Sai Rajeev (Flour Power) — we’re told that the showcase promises homebakers both new and old, as well as some Insta famous names like Hew & Frost and Sugar Brush, known for their beautiful pictures. Cindana who is also the co-founder of Centre Court Events that is organising the bake sale tells us, “We have 30 bakers on the list and we’ve heavily curated the menus so that each stall has goodies that are unique to it, whether it is entirely cookie-centric (Thillis) or just something that you probably haven’t heard about before like a Sri Lankan Bibikkan (by the oldest baker on the list 70-year-old Shyamala of Shyamala’s  Culinary Classes).”

Brownies & beatboxing
Personally, after a glance through what’s in store, we can’t wait to try the Old Monk Brownies (Biscous Gourmet) and Bailey’s Tiramisu (Sugar Brush). If you happen to be counting calories, don’t worry, there are is a separate section of options (Lean Bean and Sugar Monkeys) that swap refined flour for wheat or almond flour, butter for avocado and even serve up a hit of whey protein! Palate teasers aside, there will also be live music performances, including a beatboxing session — to keep your other senses as engaged as your taste buds.

On August 4. At Rani Lady Meyammai School. 4 pm to 9 pm. INR 50 to INR 300.
