You might remember Truly Scrumptious from its takeaway outlets a few years ago. Operations were put on pause when founder Uttara Prakash Bhasker fell quite ill. But now, she’s back. And this time — with her first café. The 200 sq ft outlet in Adyar makes for a great Instagram shot from the outside with its white brick wall and frosty glass windows on a rainy evening. And the inside with warm wooden tones and framed ice cones on the wall that look straight out of a 1960’s poster, is as cosy as can be.

We head over for an after-dinner, dessert fix. And one bite of their Peanut butter and Chocolate brownie is enough to have us sold on their tagline: ‘Makers of high-class confectionery’. Walk-in customers can choose from an assortment of 11 brownies, nine flavours of ice cream and a handful of popsicle options — including an extremely popular virgin mojito (which sadly isn’t available today). Our curiosity perks up when Uttara who is entirely self-taught — shares that they also have a hush-hush Beer ice cream that is available, for private orders. And that’s not all, over her eight years in the business of baking and whipping up experiments in the kitchen — this 34-year-old also has flavoured butters to the tune of Zanzibar and Classic Steak, as well as Andhra-style pork and mutton pickles from a secret recipe on her mother’s side of the family. This is apart from profiteroles, pies, cakes and dessert jars.

However, to satiate our sweet cravings today — we decide to get a taste every single ice cream on the counter — swapping out scoops for teaspoons. And this arrives on a lovely little platter, that looks straight out of an episode of Nigella Lawson’s show, The Taste. Our first flavour, which is the hottest seller for good reason, is the Chocolate Hazelnut. This one is undeniably sinful (our memory of it as we type, has us yearning for some right now) without being overly sweet. “All our ice creams are preservative-free,” Uttara shares, as we lick our spoons. This is also why, “they melt 30 per cent faster,” her husband Vignesh Bhasker, offers a useful tidbit of trivia to keep in mind if you’re planning a takeaway. We proceed to sample the Milo, Cookie Dough, Salted Caramel, Belgian Dark Chocolate, and our personal favourite — Coffee Cinnamon. The latter belts out creamy coffee notes with a hit of cinnamon coming through. On the fruity end, a Berry Blast made with a blend of strawberry, raspberry and blueberry compote, although we much prefer the Sitaphal which is made with fresh fruit, given it is currently in season.

We finish off with more chocolate, but of course. Uttara's Mississippi Mud Pie is light with whipped cream on top that transitions into a decadent chocolate base. And one final brownie for the road — a gooey chocolate variant — which we must admit, lives up to its name!

Open 11 am to 11 pm, till midnight on weekends. Price: INR 150 for an ice cream scoop, INR 400
for half a litre. Brownies at INR 100 to INR 140. Flavoured butters at INR 150 and pickles at INR 350.
